Research summary

Contributions concern the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The top-quark pair production cross section was measured in lepton+jets events using secondary-vertex b-tagging on 162 pb^-1, with 48 candidate events against 13.5 +- 1.8 expected background, yielding sigma_ttbar = 5.6 +1.2 -1.1(stat) +0.9 -0.6(syst) pb [5]. Electroweak single top-quark production was observed at 5.0 sigma using 3.2 fb^-1, with a measured cross section of 2.3 +0.6 -0.5 pb, |V_tb| = 0.91 +- 0.11(stat+syst) +- 0.07(theory), and |V_tb| > 0.71 at 95% C.L. assuming m_t = 175 GeV/c^2 [3]. The forward-backward charge asymmetry in top-pair production was measured in 1.9 fb^-1, with parton-level asymmetries A_FB^ppbar = 0.17 +- 0.08 in the ppbar frame and A_FB^tt = 0.24 +- 0.14 in the ttbar frame, consistent with the SM and disfavouring exotic mechanisms with significant negative values [7]. The J/psi and b-hadron production cross sections were measured in 39.7 pb^-1, with sigma(J/psi inclusive) = 4.08 +- 0.02_stat pb for all pT (0-20 GeV/c) in |y| < 0.6 [1], and J/psi/psi(2S) polarizations as functions of pT (5-30 GeV/c) at |y| < 0.6 were measured using 800 pb^-1, with both vector mesons becoming increasingly longitudinal as pT increases [9]. A narrow near-threshold structure in the J/psi phi mass spectrum from exclusive B+ -> J/psi phi K+ decays was reported with mass 4143.0 +- 2.9 +- 1.2 MeV/c^2 and width 11.7 +8.3 -5.0 +- 3.7 MeV/c^2 in 2.7 fb^-1, with significance >3.8 sigma [2]. Quantum numbers J^PC of the X(3872) in X(3872) -> J/psi pi+ pi- with J/psi -> mu+ mu- were constrained to 1++ or 2-+ using 780 pb^-1 [6]. A dijet resonance search in 1.13 fb^-1 was consistent with NLO QCD with no evidence of new particles, yielding 95% C.L. upper limits on cross-section x branching fraction for dijet decays with |y| < 1 [4]. First flavor-tagged bounds on 2 beta_s in B_s^0 -> J/psi phi were determined using ~2,000 B_s^0 decays in 1.35 fb^-1 [8], and inclusive W and Z cross sections were measured in 72.0 +- 4.3 pb^-1 with consistent e-mu universality [8 in idx 8 also covers WZ]. Methodologically the work is multi-channel exclusive reconstruction and secondary-vertex b-tagging in a general-purpose hadron-collider detector.
