Research summary
Research surveys ultrathin two-dimensional nanomaterials and their preparation, properties and applications. A Chemical Reviews article reviews 2D nanomaterials with emphasis on physical, chemical, electronic and optical properties and synthetic strategies developed since graphene exfoliation in 2004 [1], and an ACS Nano Perspective discusses synthetic routes and promising applications of ultrathin 2D nanomaterials [4]. A Chemical Society Reviews piece focuses on metal dichalcogenide nanosheets, taking MoS2 as a representative case for preparation, properties and applications in electronics, optoelectronics and energy storage [5]. An Angewandte Chemie article reported single-layer 2D semiconductors (MoS2, WS2, TiS2, TaS2, ZrS2 plus graphene) prepared by electrochemical lithiation in 92 percent yield for single-layer MoS2, and demonstrated a thin-film MoS2 transistor with NO sensing down to 190 ppt [6]. An Accounts of Chemical Research review covers preparation and applications of mechanically exfoliated single-layer and multilayer MoS2 and WSe2, emphasising direct-gap behaviour and high on/off ratios that suit them to FET applications absent in graphene [7]. Graphene composites are surveyed for synthesis methods of polymer and inorganic-nanostructure hybrids [2], and a Small review covers preparation, characterisation, properties and applications of graphene, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide [3].
