Research summary

GBD 2015 integrated mortality data from vital registration and verbal autopsy with prevalence estimates from health surveys, prospective cohorts, administrative data and registries to produce up-to-date estimates of cardiovascular-disease burden across 10 causes from 1990 to 2015 [1]. A systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based eye-disease studies refreshed the Global Vision Database for cause of vision-loss data from 1990 to 2015 with disaggregation by cause and forecasts to 2020 [2]. Hierarchical modeling on population-based eye-disease surveys from January 1980 to October 2018 estimated 1990-2020 prevalence and relative contribution of avoidable causes of blindness and vision impairment globally, comparing against the WHA Global Action Plan target of 25% reduction in avoidable vision impairment from 2010 to 2019 [3]. The Global Burden of Cancer 2013 analysis used GBD 2013 methodology to estimate mortality, incidence, YLDs, YLLs and DALYs for 28 cancers in 188 countries by sex from 1990 to 2013, drawing cancer-registry incidence and mortality-incidence ratios [4]. GBD 2016 dementia analysis combined vital registration, published literature, surveys and health-service data to produce the first detailed global prevalence, mortality and burden estimates for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias from 1990 to 2016 [5]. A comparative risk assessment based on 844 studies of 8.69 million participants from 154 countries (1980-2015) used spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression to estimate mean SBP and quantify burden of disease attributable to SBP of 110-115 mm Hg and >=140 mm Hg by age and sex for 195 countries 1990-2015 [6]. A deep learning system was trained and evaluated on 494,661 retinal images from multiethnic populations with diabetes for detection of referable and vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy, possible glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration in community and clinic-based settings [7]. GBD 2015 estimates of global, regional and national prevalence, mortality, DALYs, YLLs and YLDs for neurological disorders during 1990-2015 quantified the disease burden of neurological conditions and its relationship with country development level [8]. GBD 2017 used global, regional and national data to estimate chronic respiratory disease prevalence, morbidity and mortality from 1990 to 2017 through analysis of deaths, DALYs and YLLs [9].
