Research summary

Reference [1] reviews how photosynthesis, photorespiration, and light signalling interact with plant defence responses. The paper argues that the photosynthetic apparatus must operate dynamically because light availability and other environmental factors fluctuate, and that homeostatic mechanisms respond to and influence cellular energy and reductant status while photoreceptors monitor light quality. Outside controlled growth rooms, plants must regulate defence within this changing energy and signalling context. References [2], [5], [7], and [8] form a series on kidney injury and fibrosis. Paper [2] shows that inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome attenuates apoptosis in contrast-induced acute kidney injury through upregulation of HIF1A and BNIP3-mediated mitophagy. Paper [5] reports that caspase-11-mediated tubular epithelial pyroptosis underlies contrast-induced acute kidney injury, identifying caspases 4/5 in human tubular epithelial cells and the murine caspase-11 homolog as drivers of tubular cell death after iodinated contrast exposure.
