Research summary

Reference [1] reports the detection of TeV gamma-ray emission from the northeast rim of supernova remnant SN 1006 with the CANGAROO 3.8 m telescope. SN 1006, a Type Ia remnant, had been a leading candidate for an extended TeV source after ASCA observed synchrotron X-ray emission from the rim implying very-high-energy electrons up to hundreds of TeV. The observed gamma-ray flux is (2.4 ± 0.5 ± 0.7) × 10⁻¹² cm⁻² s⁻¹ above about 3 TeV, supplying further evidence for a supernova remnant origin of cosmic rays. Reference [2] investigates how moderate low temperature near 19°C disrupts pollen development in rice. Endogenous levels of the bioactive gibberellins GA4 and GA7, and the expression of biosynthetic genes GA20ox3 and GA3ox1, decrease in developing anthers exposed to low temperature, while levels of the GA12 precursor rise. Expression of a dehydration-responsive element-related set of genes is also altered, linking gibberellin metabolism to cool-temperature injury and grain-yield reduction. Reference [3] reports CANGAROO detection of gamma rays above 7 TeV from the Crab pulsar and nebula at large zenith angles from Woomera, South Australia. Data from 1992, 1993, and 1995 indicate that the energy spectrum extends to at least 50 TeV without a change in power-law index. The differential spectrum between 7 and 50 TeV is (2.01 ± 0.36) × 10⁻³ (E / 7 TeV)⁻²·³³ TeV⁻¹ cm⁻² s⁻¹, with no apparent cutoff. The spectrum at energies above about 10 TeV allows the maximum particle acceleration energy to be inferred and implies that the unpulsed emission does not originate near the light cylinder. Reference [4] differentiates three mutant erythrocyte pyruvate kinases in congenital nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia using thin-layer polyacrylamide electrophoresis and kinetic studies. In one family, proband and father had faster-migrating pyruvate kinase with high Michaelis-Menten constants while the mother had normal migration and kinetics but low activity. In a second family, proband and mother had slower-migrating enzyme with elevated Km. In a third family, proband and mother again had faster-migrating enzyme with high Km in the proband. Together the four papers span very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy of supernova remnants and pulsar wind nebulae, plant physiology of cool-temperature injury, and biochemical characterisation of erythrocyte enzyme variants.
