How to use this tool
Solve on screen
Scan the grid horizontally, vertically, and diagonally for the words listed below. Words can run forward only — no reverse spellings — to keep beginner difficulty manageable. Cross each word off the list as you find it.
Print and share
Use your browser's print dialog (Ctrl+P / Cmd+P) and the puzzle prints without the site navigation, ads, or controls. Pinterest-pin friendly. Great for classroom worksheets, language-club games, or Discord study challenges.
Learn the vocab
The word list below the grid shows each word in romaji (used in the puzzle), hiragana or katakana (how Japanese writes it), and English meaning. After solving, spend a minute reading each word in kana — that's the actual study payload.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the word-search generator work?
Pick a theme — anime, JLPT N5 vocab, food, days of the week, body parts — and the tool builds a 12×12 grid with the theme words placed horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Empty cells get filled with random romaji letters. The word list appears below the grid so you can check your finds. Print or save as PDF when done.
Are the words in romaji or Japanese characters?
The puzzle grid uses romaji because most puzzle solvers find it faster to scan Latin letters. The word list below the grid shows each word in three forms: romaji, hiragana / katakana, and English meaning. That way you can solve in romaji and learn the kana naturally as you check the list.
Can I print this for a classroom?
Yes. Use your browser's print dialog (Ctrl+P / Cmd+P) and the worksheet prints cleanly on standard A4 / Letter paper without ads or the navigation header. We do not watermark, track, or rate-limit. Generate as many puzzles as your class needs.
Why is this useful for Japanese learners?
Word-search puzzles drill spelling and word-recognition without feeling like flashcards. They also expose you to vocabulary you might not pick from a textbook — anime characters, slang foods, body-part idioms. Pair this with our Vocabulary Explorer for a deeper study session.
Can I make my own word list?
Not yet — the current themes are curated. A user-defined word list is on the roadmap. If you have a specific list you want, paste it into our Vocabulary Extractor and the tool will give you readings and meanings to make your own offline puzzle.
What is the recommended difficulty?
For N5 beginners, the "Days of the Week" and "Body Parts" themes are easiest (short words, common vocab). For N4-N3, try the "Food" or "JLPT N4 mix". The Anime theme has the longest words (5-8 letters) so it is the hardest to spot but the most fun.
